The German-American painter Albert Bierstadt's monumental landscapes defined the vision of the West in the American popular imagination. Recently, scholars have noted how Bierstadt's vision of the West was informed by his training in Düsseldorf, a small but influential city on the Rhine, far from the Rocky Mountains.
