LECTURE: From the Renaissance to Today” Transhistorical Notes on the Collection
Almost 60 years ago, George Kubler’s book The Shape of Time challenged the accepted art historical narrative by suggesting that art is simply the visual manifestation of a continuous conversation through time. If that is so, what is the link between contemporary paintings and the Renaissance? How does ancient or medieval symbolism inform artists today? Does the history of art play a role in today’s research-intensive practices? Join Ena Heller, the Bruce A. Beal Director of CFAM, as she delves into the continuum of art history in search of answers to these questions and illustrates them with works from the permanent collection.
